Myoga: Your new favourite veggie - September 14 Guided Work Party

By Jasmine Shi

Lots of weeding was done today. This was done to prepare the potato bed for planting garlic next month. We also weeded around the leek bed to reduce competition for our young leeks.

Amy harvested some myoga from our herb bed for each of the volunteers today. Myoga is a plant native to Japan — its other name is Japanese ginger. It is related to regular ginger, however its roots cannot be eaten. Instead, its flower buds are harvested for consumption. Amy said it can be added to dipping sauces and is good for renewing the appetite. It’s cool that we’re able to grow this plant in Vancouver!
