Alex enlightened us with some cool facts about genetically modified organism (GMO) veggies. Did you know there are only four varieties of produce that are approved for GMOs in Canada? We all thought it was way more (maybe in the thousands).
We learned that genetic modification may not be so bad after all. It’s not so different from plant breeding, which farmers have been doing all throughout history. Alex has been breeding his own species of sunflower over the past seven years. He brought a monstrous-looking flower head that he got this year. Doesn’t it look like a fluffy toy?
We had an amazing amount of harvest today. We got parsnips, blueberries, loads of cucumbers, garlic chives, different varieties of kale—too many to name!
It’s good that we’re starting to keep a good record of everything we harvest by carefully noting down how much we harvest of each type of produce and even differentiating them by variety.
A big thank you to Laura, Ruth, and Shahira from the neighbourhood house for making us traditional Cuban food and teaching us about the unique cuisine that enslaved people used to eat. We enjoyed rice with black beans, a smashed banana dish, and citrus-noted cassava. Delish!
