Guided Work Party - June 26th

Woo! It’s finally starting to feel like Summer. The temperature is getting to high 20s, so we pulled out the rotating sprinkler to water the rewilder garden beds and also to cool off the hardworking volunteers. The compost reached 27 Celsius yet again. New recruit Hugo helped with stirring the compost and adding some more chopped up ingredients.

The broad beans from the citizen seed trial were under review for germination as it has been 2 weeks since we seeded them. We wanted to compare the effects of potting mix on germination by seeding half of the plot on a bed of potting mix and the other half without. Interestingly, it appears that the potting mix does give a boost to the seedlings and germinates better!

We harvested a few more garlic scapes, broccoli heads, as well as a variety of salad green as they are beginning to bolt in this heat. The Strawberry Tea event was right after the work party, so the volunteers were able to get a delicious lunch made by Cat Poppins.

A shade cloth was added to the vertical garden to protect the sensitive lettuce greens from the heat.

Runner beans are showing up.

The two rows on the right side are seeded with a layer of potting mix. You can visually see a difference!

Guided Work Party - June 22nd

We gathered a lot of lettuce and arugula which was shared out.  New volunteer Jasmine helped stir the compost which again reached an impressive 27C, showing that we are almost achieving hot composting!

Selina led a group weeding the Orchard area, and Angela led a group weeding the blueberry and strawberry areas. There is lots of weeding to do during this season!

New irrigation expert Shauna assessed the current drip irrigation set-up and replaced some of the lines with more frequent emitters; she hopes to finish this work on Sunday.

Strawberry Tea - What's happening?

We are in the midst of the yearly pollinator week, the best week of the year in my opinion. Why not bring your friends and family to our strawberry themed afternoon tea party? We have prepared interactive activities for the whole family, from scavenger hunts to compost games to seed paper making. We also will be giving out pollinator-friendly plants and seeds so you can grow your own butterflyway. Many knowledgeable gardeners will be there to answer any questions.

Hopefully, we all get to see a swallowtail butterfly if they decide to stop by for an appearance! But if not, you can find them in our newly released “Follow the Swallowtail” video. Linked here.

Any who, remember to save the date (Sunday, June 26th)! No reservations needed!

Guided Work Party - June 19th

Today we tackled the aphid problem using the power of water! Both apricot trees and the broad beans received a nice spray down and by the end of the work party, no more aphids can be seen. Scary to think where they all went…

Emily weighing the harvest

An interesting conversation was generated around the nitrogen content of compost. It is important to get your compost tested because we learnt today that a percentage higher than 2% would mean that the nitrogen gets released the year the compost is applied. Remember that nitrogen promotes vegetative/green growth, so if you want anything like fruits or flowers out of a plant, high nitrogen might not be the best idea.

Jan teaching about pollination

Volunteers worked together to hill the growing potatoes to prevent any green toxic potatoes from forming. A few lucky volunteers got to try the young fava beans. Unfortunately, they were not yet ready for harvest. Last but not least, two varieties of tumbler cherry tomatoes were planted in the vertical garden.
