Recently, we had the pleasure of interviewing Lori Weidenhammer, better known as Madame Beespeaker. Lori is an artist, naturalist, and a cherished long-time partner of LMNHS.
Lori's artistic practice revolves around nature, with a focus on spreading awareness about the crucial role bees play in our ecosystem. Her primary interest lies in pollinators, but her passion extends to all aspects of the natural world. Working with people of all ages, especially through gardening, is something Lori truly enjoys. As she puts it, "Creative activities connect and bond people with nature, motivating them to protect it."
Lori’s involvement with LMNHS began around 20 years ago when she started bringing her child to the playgroup at the neighbourhood house. She then attended ecology workshops and became involved in designing the Riley Park Community Garden. She fiercely advocated for native and beneficial plants, especially for Fireweed to be planted in the garden, despite concerns from the Parks Board. Her efforts created what the garden is today. She says, “Fireweed is very profound when you see how it regenerates miraculously and grow out of the fire-scorched landscape.”
At the garden, Lori has held workshops for younger kids, teaching them about bees by catching and observing them in jars. For adults, Lori has led plant walks, discussing plants and their relationship to bees, seed-saving tips, planting advice, and wildlife. She believes that making these experiences accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds is important, as not everyone can afford them. Lori also created seasonal guides showcasing the garden's blooms throughout the year, as well as bingo cards themed around bees, weeds and butterflies – access the resources here: Winter Pollinator, Spring, and Summer.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Lori found solace in the Riley Park Community Garden. She emphasizes the therapeutic value of spending time in nature, saying, "The garden inspires me and nourishes me spiritually and emotionally."
We are incredibly grateful to have collaborated with Lori. Her work has had a profound impact on the community, bringing a wealth of wisdom, creativity, and a deep love for nature. Lori’s contributions to establishing the garden and sharing her expertise on plants and bees have been invaluable and inspiring. We look forward to working with her again on future projects.
