Apple Day recap — September 28

We had good weather, a nice turnout, and lots of eager volunteers of all ages today.

We had an apple sample table with four varieties of seasonal apples from the Unity Farm Collective, Choices Market brought an apple dish for the potluck table as well as others from our volunteers, and the Vancouver Fruit Tree Project provided us with boxes of apples for juicing which were enthusiastically chopped up by our volunteers before shredding and juicing.

Our newly purchased apple press and shredder worked well together, operated by nearly everyone present, including some small children who worked hard at the hand cranking, with some encouragement from the adults!  We probably processed about 80-100 lbs of apples, including those from two nearby gardens, the householders taking away bottles of juice.

In the end we ran out of bottles before we ran out of apples! Our dehydrator was also demonstrated by Art Bomke, another excellent way to preserve apples for winter eating.
