Transplanting plants and a bountiful summer harvest - Aug 28 Guided Work Party
By Alex Kaiser
Our August 28 work party started off with digging up some self-seeded Verbena bonariensis from the south side of our veggie beds and potting them up to share with our volunteers, plant swaps and the public. Discussion focused on proper transplanting techniques, removing flowers and soil from plants for best results and avoiding the transfer of pests and diseases from one garden to another.
Amy shared wonderful information on how garlic chives are harvested in Japan, and we discussed how harvesting tomatoes early and ripening them indoors can help reduce crop losses due to birds and rodents. Tons of beans, cucumbers, summer squash and tomatoes were harvested from the garden as well as blueberries, leafy greens and chives. A truly bountiful harvest today!
